These days there’s plenty of bad news to fret about. But whether we like what’s happening in the world around us or not, we can’t allow the chaotic state of current affairs to steal our joy and stop us from living our best lives.
Instead, let’s shift our focus and fill up our emotional reservoir with things that spark comfort and joy. What makes you feel good all over, Sis?
Maybe it’s curling up with a good book, whipping up culinary delights, taking a brisk nature walk, planning a girls trip or a solo adventure, treating yourself to a massage, facial or mani-pedi (or all of the above), or spending quality time with family and friends (furry friends count, too).
For me, taking my Mom on a movie date to see Cynthia Erivo’s brilliant and gravity defying performance in Wicked was an instantaneous, Black woman affirming mood booster. Another thing that always helps to keep my spirits bright is listening to music and curating these soul stirring and playful playlists for Sisters From AARP. And if I do say so myself, this playlist is packed with 30 feel-good songs that are worthy of listening to on repeat.
Some of the high frequency songs included are: “I Feel Good” by Mary J. Blige; “I’m So Excited” by The Pointer Sisters; Betty Carter’s jazzy rendition of “My Favourite Things”; “Feels Good” by Tony! Toni! Tone!; “I Love Your Smile” by Shanice; “Best by Far” by Omar; “Good Life” by Inner City; “The Pleasure Principle” by Janet Jackson; Angie Stone’s take on Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Be Ever Wonderful"; and “Happy Feeling,” Maysa’s version of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly’s “Happy Feelin’s.”
And as Nina Simone sings on “Feeling Good,” “It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day. It’s a new life for me…And I’m feeling good.”
So press play and keep feeling that good vibration, Sis.
