Whether you prefer the sweet melody of the theme song from the cultural hit television show “Girlfriends” (Oooo My Girlfriends, there through thick and thin) or the exceptionally intense rhythmic beat of Saweetie’s “Best Friend” (She’s my best friend. She’s a real bad chick), either line can be used to describe what Tracee Ellis Ross has come to represent in our hearts. She is the queen of self-love, reigning supreme in the kingdom of “enoughness.” And inspires others, especially Black women, to do the same through the affirmations she constantly drops, like this one that endeared her to numerous fans on Instagram:
"I need to see my own beauty and continue to be reminded that I am enough, that I am worthy of love without effort, that I am beautiful, that the texture of my hair, the shape of my curves, the size of my lips, the color of my skin, and the feelings that I have are all worthy and okay."
She is that girl!
Born Tracee Joy Silberstein in Los Angeles, California, Tracee is the daughter of the legendary Diana Ross and music producer Robert Ellis Silberstein. Bold! Quirky! She knows her worth! Living her best life! These are just a few sentiments describing the effortlessly chic woman, who is never afraid to speak her mind. Emmy-winning actress, producer, CEO, style icon, and social justice advocate Tracee Ellis Ross. If there is a common thread that sums up how Tracee has endeared herself to audiences, it is her commitment to being unapologetically herself at every turn.
Tracee, 52, was recently applauded for her outspoken words about childless women. During a virtual event for then-presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, Ross celebrated Harris and the host, Oprah Winfrey, as stellar examples of “childless women.” She contends each woman demonstrates how “childless women have been mothering the world and elevating the culture as aunties, godmothers, teachers, mentors, sisters, and friends.” Tracee ended the proclamation, noting that “you do not need to push out a baby to help push humanity forward.”
Of course, Tracee can be counted amongst this group. It was her dynamic role as wife and mother Dr. Rainbow Johnson on the hit comedy Black-ish that afforded her the opportunity to help educate the masses. Week after week, Ross and the cast used humor to tackle matters of race, identity, and family dynamics. She played this role so well that she was lauded with NAACP awards and a Golden Globe for her efforts. Yet, in real life, she is neither married nor a mother.
All the single ladies
“Choicefully single,” as declared by Ross, our girlfriend Tracee exudes confidence in the decisions she makes, be it her professional or personal life. Back in 2020, she shared this inspiring message with the audience during Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour: “I, like many of us, was taught to grow up dreaming of my wedding and not of my life and also waiting to be chosen. Well, here’s the thing: I’m the chooser.” She can choose to be married. She can choose to have children. But more importantly, she chooses to create the life she wants. Living out loud in many respects, such as her chosen career path in front of the camera, her advocacy for social justice, and her vibrant style choices on and off the red carpet, Tracee has chosen to keep details of her love life quiet. She scarcely appears in the tabloids.
While we may not get details about romantic matters of the heart, Ross will give viewers a glimpse into something she loves which supports her self-care. When Tracee’s Travels debuts this year as part of Roku’s Original lineup, Tracee will take us on her luxurious solo escapades across the globe. Tracee tells Roku Newsroom, “I decided way back then [when she took her first solo trip at 22] that I wouldn’t wait to do the things I wanted to do or for my life to come to me.” Instead, she has been creating her desired life and racking up accolades. Among them are the 2025 Women’s Wear Daily (WWD) Hollywood Trailblazer Style Award for her undeniable style and the 2022 Racial Justice Trailblazer Award at the Higginbotham Gala for racial and social justice advocacy. During her acceptance speech, Ross summed up another reason why she has gained the admiration of millions, stating that she “champions Blackness and Black joy" in everything she does.”
Undeniable legacy
Fittingly, Tracee Ellis Ross’s middle name is Joy because she embodies pure joy and spreads joy. She is a guiding force, lighting the way for those who dare to live on their own terms. She has solidified her place as a cultural icon through her work, words, and unwavering commitment to self-love and empowerment. She is not just an actress or a style maven - she is a constant reminder, encouraging and inspiring legions of women to embrace their full, vibrant selves. As Tracee continues to pave her path, she leaves a legacy of confidence, courage, and undeniable brilliance, reminding us that we are enough.
